Chief Academic Officer, Theresa O'Brien

Mrs. Theresa O'Brien's been a member of the LPS family since student teaching at Washington Elementary in 1988.  She worked as a teacher for fifteen years at Garfield, Roosevelt, Washington and Cooper Upper Elementary. She also served the district as a Mathematics Facilitator and a teacher leader. In 2010 she was approved as an Elementary Principal at Hayes Elementary. She recently returned to Cooper Upper Elementary as Principal prior to being named as Chief Academic Officer in 2017.

Mrs. O’Brien studied at University of Michigan- Dearborn, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. She received two Masters Degrees from Madonna University, a Masters in Teaching and Learning and second Masters of Science in Educational Leadership. In 2016 she received her Central Office Certification from Oakland University.

In her current position as Chief Academic Officer her responsibilities include the K-12 Curriculum and Instruction Department, the K-12 Student Assessment Department, Federal Programs, English Language Learner, and McKinney Vento Programs. She is also responsible for coordination and management of reporting requirements for District and School Accreditation for AdvancED and Michigan Department of Education, K-12 Textbook and Instructional Resource purchases, and K-12 Classroom Technology purchases related to the 2013 Bond.

Mrs. O'Brien chairs multiple district-level committees such as Division of Instruction, Quality Assurance Review (QAR) Team and Technology Bond Professional Development Committee. 

Department Information

The Academic Services Department oversees the facilitation of the curriculum, instruction and assessment offices. These departments support school improvement initiatives and NCA processes, development and implementation of the K-12curriculum, coordination and analysis of student assessment programs, textbooks, and instructional materials selection, and professional development opportunities.
